Importance of Play for Children

“Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood.”  ~Fred Rogers

We recently had a program called Learning Through Play, presented by Penfield Children’s Center and Kohl’s Cares. This interesting program discussed the importance of play in a child’s development, different play strategies that can be incorporated into play to promote a child’s development, how to create a safe play space and how to select toys that promote development.

Play is a crucial component to promoting a child’s development. During play children help to develop their fine and gross motor skills, cognitive development, communication and social/emotional skills. It’s one of the most important things you can do with a young child!

Penfield Children’s Center shared the following tips for making the most out of playtime with your child:

  1. Follow your child’s lead
  2. Go slow
  3. Read your child’s signals
  4. Challenge them
  5. Repetition
  6. Adapt activities to meet your child’s needs
  7. Have fun!

Did you know that you can help your child learn through play here at the library? We offer a playgroup every Friday morning from 9:30-10:30 a.m. in the Youth Program Room. The library provides all the toys! Playgroup is a social opportunity for young children and their adults to meet others to play, read and learn together. Come play with your child at the library and practice those tips for making the most out of playtime!

No registration is required for playgroup, however, space is limited so please check in at the Youth Services Desk upon arrival.
