This past February, we received exciting news! We learned that the Waukesha County Federated Library System (WCFLS) had been awarded a Library Service and Technology Act (LSTA) grant for an accessibility project to serve members of our collective Waukesha County communities that are affected by hearing loss.  Funds were allocated for eight portable hearing loop systems to be installed at WCFLS libraries. Written by Angela Meyers, WCFLS Special Needs and PR Librarian, these systems aide patrons who use hearing aids or cochlear implants enhance their ability to hear.

As one of the 8 WCFLS libraries selected for this technology, this week, the NBPL hearing loop system was installed and here's what this means for the over 20% of library visitors that are affected by hearing loss...

A hearing loop system is an Assistive Listening System that transfers sound directly to your hearing device or cochlear implant via a tiny and inexpensive telecoil "T-Coil" receiver. All cochlear implants and most hearing aids have this built in wireless T-Coil receiver and can be activated by pushing a button on the device. Once activated....

-There is no extra noise, wall bounce, echo or sound distortion.

-The loop delivers customized sound to your device.

-Sound is contained to your device, so you never have to worry you may be bothering others.

We have a loop at the main circulation desk service for your convenience when working with our circulation staff.

As you use this service, or share this with others with hearing impairment, please let us know if you have questions.

For any questions about your hearing aids and t-coils, consult with your audiologist or health care provider. Should your provider have questions, please contact the hearing loop advocate, Dr. Juliette Sterkens at the following:  jsterkens@new.rr.com.

WCFLS Member Libraries with Loops: Brookfield, Delafield, Elm Grove, Mukwonago, Muskego, Oconomowoc and Waukesha.

Thanks,

Natalie
