8 Things Your Librarian Wants You to Know

As you most likely know by now, our library is so much more than just a place to check out books or enjoy an occasional story time. And, our staff at the New Berlin Library happily strives to help you make the most of everything we offer. However, because our library is so multi-faceted, many ins and outs exist that you, dear patron, may not be aware of. Below is a compilation of the top eight things our librarians want you to know:

1. No One Book Is “Better” Than the Other

We love that you love reading! Whether you are drawn to books that are brand new releases or 100 years old, fiction or nonfiction, classics or contemporary, our librarians are always happy to help you find exactly what you want. It’s all good!

2. We Do Not Care if You Have Fines

Of course fines still need to be paid, but no need to be embarrassed! Many patrons accrue fines at one time or another and as staff, we may or may not have occasionally gone down the fine road, too! To fine is human …

3. Please Do Not Fix Any Damage to Library Items

We understand things happen … rips, spills and damaged pieces are simply part of the deal when using your library … but we have specialized equipment and supplies to fix these occasional mishaps to our beloved items. We do, however, appreciate knowing when damage occurs.

4. Mark Donations as Donations

Our patrons are always so generous, and we love that you think of us when you have a book (or 10!) that needs a new home. However, if you simply drop a personal book into our book return or outdoor book drop without a note, we will think it is a mistake. And then the book will sit sadly in our lost & found rather than being shared with others who would enjoy it. Speaking of book drops …

5. We Have a Drive-Thru That Can Handle Many of Your Transactions

At our drive up window - located on the south side of the building - you can pick up items, drop off items, pay fines, renew your library card and ask us all your burning library questions. Let us help make your library transaction as easy as possible!

6. Yes, You Can Check Out the Books on Our Displays

Each month, our talented and creative staff creates beautiful, eye-catching displays with curated collections; displays designed to catch your eye paired with book collections designed to pique your interest. Please feel free to pluck a book from a display table and enjoy!

7. You Are Never Bothering Librarians at the Reference Desk

Our upstairs reference desk is designed for patrons to locate us easily and find the assistance they need. While we appreciate the politeness, apologies are not necessary! You are not interrupting us. As librarians, our favorite part of the job is helping and engaging with our patrons.

8. Your CAFÉ Library Card Will Work at Any of Our 24 Bridges Libraries

If you have a CAFÉ Library card, you can check out and return items (except things marked “pick up and return to owning library”) at any of our 24 Bridges Library System libraries. Even if you checked out an item in New Berlin, feel free to drop it off at any of the other public libraries in Waukesha County or Jefferson County. For a complete list of CAFÉ Libraries, visit the Bridges Library System website.
