The Case for Audiobooks

Did you know that 7 in 10 (69.5%) children and young people said that listening to audiobooks makes it easier to understand the content of a book? And this number is even higher for boys (71.7%)! Audiobooks aren't just great for improving reading comprehension, but they also help improve our mood, productivity, sleep, and our reading goals. They also are a great resource for people who have barriers to visual reading, as they provide a different opportunity and experience for readers. Down below, we've highlighted 4 major benefits of listening to audiobooks!

#1: Hands-free reading

Let's face it, our to-do lists are never ending and there just isn't enough time to read in the day. That's why audiobooks are a great way to still get your reading in all while still accomplishing your everyday tasks. Enjoy stories and tales from other worlds while you fold laundry, put away dishes, clean up your space, drive to work, get your grocery shopping done, and even when you travel. With audiobooks, you don't have to fall behind on your reading goals or personal goals.

#2: Alternative to screen time

As helpful and entertaining as our smart devices can be, it's good to give our brains (and eyes!) a break from the digital world. Audiobooks are a great tool to lean onto if you're trying to reduce you or your kids screen time. They're also not just great for entertainment, but they also help increase listening comprehension. The best part is, they can also be shared with loved ones and are a great activity to do with friends or family.

#3: Improves mental health

Your first thought might not be that audiobooks are beneficial to your mental health, but they are! Like we mentioned previously, they're a great way to improve listening comprehension, but they can also help improve memory. The most notable benefit of audiobooks is the ability to unplug from everyday life and unwind and destress with a good story. Because of their destressing capabilities, audiobooks have been known to increase moods and interrupt negative thinking patterns. With increased mood and a sense of relaxation, audiobooks have also been known to help aide readers in a good night's sleep.

#4: Accessibility

Arguably, the best benefit of audiobooks is the accessibility they provide to readers who may otherwise struggle with reading. Audiobooks offer the opportunity to read for those with visual impairment, second language learners, individuals with learning or reading disabilities such as dyslexia, and other disabilities that may impair visual reading. This is extremely important, as everyone has the right and deserves to be able to access information or read for pleasure as they wish.
