The New Berlin Public Library MakerStudio welcomes you to create, draft, dream, and make. And now, starting October 1, we will have equipment you can reserve and use in the MakerStudio to do just that! To see all of our equipment available for use, and a description of each item, check out our MakerStudio page.
How to Reserve Equipment
In order to use any of the MakerStudio equipment, patrons 18 and older must have a library card in good standing. The equipment will be housed in the MakerStudio, but to access it, you will need to stop at the Adult Service Reference Desk on the 2nd floor. All equipment must remain and be used in the MakerStudio only. Items will be available on a first come, first served basis and are reservable in 2 hour increments on our website. You can see equipment reservation availability here.
Equipment Training Sessions
In order to use the MakerStudio’s sewing machine or the Cricut machine, you must first attend a brief training session. These sessions will be 30 minutes or less and will be offered multiple times a month. Because of the hands-on nature of the sessions, each one is limited to six participants. Once you’ve completed the training, you’ll receive a designation on your library card that will allow you to use that item. Check our events calendar to find an upcoming session that will work for you!
Some of the things you learn in the session will be:
Cricut Machine:
- Use the Cricut Design Space to create basic shapes and text
- Prepare design for cutting
- Load material into the machine
- Execute cut
- Learn about additional materials that can be used with the Cricut
Sewing Machine:
- Safely thread & unthread the machine
- Load bobbin
- Attach foot pedal
- Stitch selection & tension
- Basic stitching operation
All other equipment is available to use without special training, but manuals will be provided. The equipment is available for use during the Adult Open Studio Hours only. At this time, the only item available for checkout during the All Ages Open Studio Hours is the BeaverBot.
MakerStudio Hours
The MakerStudio is generally open during library hours, and closes 30 minutes prior to library closing. Occasionally, the space may be closed for library events and programs.
Beginning September 1, the MakerStudio will resume an age-specific studio schedule. During these times, age-appropriate makers are welcome to use the space and materials to work independently on projects. Whether you’re a seasoned maker or just starting out, our MakerStudio provides the resources and support you need to create amazing projects.
