Unlocking Free Access to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: An Overview of Newsbank

Did you know that your library card gives you access to free, online magazines and newspapers, including the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel? Thanks to Newsbank, you have access to thousands of newspapers, articles, obituaries, and more! 

 

What is Newsbank? 

Newsbank is an online database that our library subscribes to so you can access national and local news articles and newspapers, all for free. All you need is a library card! 

 

What newspapers are available? 

Along with thousands of newspapers from around the country, Newsbank also provides access to national news magazines (such as The Atlantic and Smithsonian) and over 50 local Wisconsin newspapers (including Muskego-New Berlin NOW and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel). Additionally, you have access to HeritageHub, which is a collection of US obituaries and death notices from all 50 states as far back as 1704, useful for genealogical research. 

 

How do I access the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel? 

Follow these steps to start reading the Journal: 

  1. Go to newberlinlibrary.org/resources

  2. Check the box next to “Magazines & Newspapers” and click apply to filter the results. 

  3. “Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Collection” will show in the results; click on “View Resource.” 

  4. You’re in! Now you can start to browse or search for articles. Click on one of the sources in the list, choose the newspaper date, and start reading! 

 

Can I browse a digital version of the paper? 

Yes! After following the steps outlined previously, you’ll see a list of 4 types of content for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. 

  1. Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (WI) - Text Format: This will allow you to read text-only articles that have been published in the newspaper 

  2. Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (WI) - Image Format: This will take you to scanned images of the printed paper, making it easy to browse just as if the paper is in your hands. This is the one you want to select if you are looking for a digital version of the print newspaper. 

  3. Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: Blogs (WI): These will be text-only articles published on the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel blog. 

  4. Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: Web Edition Articles (WI): This will take you to text-only articles that are only published online, not in the print newspaper.
